ParadorSpain is the cheapest country in the eurozone for petrol, according to a comparative study, and the best value for money for fly-drive. The annual study by American Express Foreign Exchange found that non-EU Switzerland was the only country in Europe cheaper than Spain for a motoring holiday, and that car rental prices have actually fallen in most places. Spain even compares well with neighbours France and Italy, though Portugal seems not to have been included. Read on for more.

The study found that Spanish petrol prices have barely risen in the last year, by a mere 1p to around 65p a litre, compared with 83p in France or Italy or 86p in the UK. This means the cost per thousand miles of driving in Spain is only £107.99, compared with £138.53 in France or Italy or £142.36 in the UK (I have not seen the study, myself, but have read a number of news stories based on it). So if you have long had a hankering to do a parador-hopping tour of Spain, this may be the moment.
