Saint John's Day, Alicante
Tuesday, June 24 2008 All Day
The John in question is John the Baptist, and his saint's day is celebrated throughout the province of Alicante, most famously with the Hogueras de San Juan, Saint John's Bonfires (and fireworks, don't forget the fireworks - this is Valencia, after all), which begin on June 20th. San Juan more or less coincides with the summer solstice, so the festival's evidently pagan side is comprehensible
