Hermandades y Cofradías de Sevilla

Seville is thick with cofradías, the brotherhoods which participate in the great religious processions at Easter and other times of year. It is particularly big on what are called hermandades de penitencia, the two most important, the Jesús del Gran Poder and the Virgen de la Macarena being of this ilk. Visitors often find them not a little frightening, with their hoods and robes. You get over that when you get used to them, but I still think they are sinister.
