Pego

Pego is an agricultural town in the north of the province of Alicante, with an attractive historic centre, including a couple of churches of note. Its main interest to visitors lies in the adjacent nature reserve, the Parque Natural Marjal de Pego-Oliva. This Marjal, marsh, is a heavily silted-up lagoon around which the rice paddies have to a certain extent become fenland, has an interesting flora and is an important refuge for birdlife. It has had a conflictive history as a nature reserve, being assailed by farming interests, tourism and hunting interests, but thrives anyway. The link goes to the municipal website, oddly more complete in Castilian Spanish than Valencià, but in any case excusably lacking an English-language version.
