Quinta do Lago 

An exclusive golf resort south-east of Almancil. How exclusive? Put it like this, if it were any more exclusive, they wouldn't let anyone in at all. Oh, all right, I'm exaggerating, there are relatively affordable promotions, but Frommer's calls it a "favored retreat of movie stars and European presidents" and adds that "This is true luxury -- at quite a price," so you have been warned. Luxury shops and restaurants may be part of Quinta do Lago's appeal, but its main draw is undoubtedly its two PGA golf courses. Yup, golf is the name of the game here, serious, hard-hitting golf, beside which the attractions of the resort's position (in the Ria Formosa nature reserve), its European blue flag beach, its restaurants (I count 18), shopping centres (ordinary resorts are content with a shop or two and a supermarket) and so on are really as nothing.
