Comarca de Los Monegros

Los Monegros straddles the provinces of Huesca and Zaragoza. It a county of bare, sparsely populated, semi-desert, steppeland, and its name could not be more opposite to the reality, for it comes from "Montes Negros," from the times when the area was thickly wooded. The link goes to the Spanish-only website of the comarca, the county council.

Sariñena

Sariñena is the capital of Los Monegros and practically its only sizeable centre of population, a good base for exploring the area and visit-worthy if only for the adjacent lagoon (these lagoons are characteristic of this semi-arid region), a nature reserve of particular importance for birdlife. The link goes to its Spanish-only municipal website - the suggested Rutas por Los Monegros, routes around the area, are of interest if you are planning a visit.
