Ayuntamiento de Cangas de Onis
The village of Cangas de Onis is the capital of a large, rural consejo or municipality of the same name, much of which lies within the Picos de Europa and all of which is mountainous. The village, mountain and cave of Covadonga lie within the national park, and it was there that the Christian, mixed Visigothic and Iberoroman troops of Pelayo inflicted the first defeat of any importance on the Muslims who had occupied the rest of the Iberian Peninsula, so making possible the founding of the Kingdom of Asturias (first capital, precisely Cangas de Onis) which would eventually expand its way south and reconquer Spain and Portugal. It is a lovely area, with fabulous walking, climbing, birdwatching and general communing with nature, plus a generous scattering of Romanesque and other rural architecture of terrific charm, but the new Asturias Airport looks set to make it much more accessible from the rest of Europe than before, so you should probably visit it before some b****** buys it and turns it into a leisure park. This admirable municipal website now comes complete with a tourist guide in Spanish and English.Added on: 02-Jan-2005 | hits: 247
