Link profile: Ayuntamiento de Talavera de la Reina

Category: Start / Spain and its Regions / New Castile (Castilla-La Mancha) / Toledo / Talavera de la Reina
Talavera de la Reina is the largest city in the province of Toledo (larger than Toledo itself), with a population of nearly eighty-four thousand. It is synonymous with pottery, especially tiles, which has been made there for centuries and achieved the status of high art in the reign of Phlip II, who used it extensively in the monastery of El Escorial and other royal palaces, and you will find other examples of Talavera tiles throughout Spain. It has other important industry - textiles, especially - but has very much the feel of a country market town, right down to the weekly cattle market, though this is now held on a modern, purpose-built, covered fairground on the outskirts of town, being a professional affair for real farmers (it is not just a cattle market, either, you'll find sheep, goats and horses being traded, as well as grain and olive oil). The link goes to the municipal website, only available in Spanish.
