Portugal Approves Gay Marriage Law
The Portuguese parliament has approved a bill which will legalize same-sex marriages. The bill now needs to be reviewed by parliamentary committee and reapproved by parliament (the Assembly of the Republic), before it is brought into effect by final ratification by President Anibal Cavaco Silva. It could be law before the planned visit to Portugal in May of Pope Benedict XVI, who the BBC calls a "staunch" opponent of gay marriage.

Birds & Nature Tours
I don't know whether it is, as it claims, the "only" Portugese company dedicated to birds and birding tours, but I do know that a lot of visitors to this site are keen birdwatchers and naturalists, and Birds & Nature Tours offers interesting trips to the Tagus estuary, the Sado estuary, the Algarve and Alentejo. Read on for more information from Birds & Nature Tours.

Portugal Goes Smoke-Free
When Spanish authorities tried to impose restrictions on smoking in public spaces back in 2006, they were a long way from being completely successful. In particular, it proved impossible for them to eliminate smoking from bars and restaurants, indeed the measures introduced did not even manage to reduce significantly the number of places where smoking is allowed. Anti-smoking legislation came into force in Portugal at the beginning of this year, and in spite of the sniggering that was caused when PM José Socrates was forced to make a public apology after being caught smoking on a plane, I had imagined that it would have the same negligible effect as in Spain. But on a trip to Oporto last month, I found out I was wrong. More of this story.

The Portugal News reports that Portimão has spent €1.7 million dredging and improving its harbour with the aim of attracting the new, larger cruise ships used by companies like Royal Caribbean. This has also attracted ferry operators, and Canaries-based Naviera Armas will not only begin to operate a regular Portimão-Madeira route on June 15th, but will connect the Algarve with the Canary Islands, specifically Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
