Tenerife
By: John Ross 2005.01.05

The largest of the Canary Isles, Tenerife is a volcanic island, like all the Canaries, with a benign climate, warm and dry, but not too much so. The highly varied terrain creates a number of microclimates which make its flora and fauna extremely diverse. Average temperatures range from 17º or 18º C in winter, up to 24º or 25º C in summer, making the island a welcome retreat at all times of year.

The Canaries fall outside the European customs zone, and Tenerife is a shopping paradise, although Spanish value-added tax applies. Indeed, the combination of climate and low cost-of-living makes Tenerife almost as popular with second homeowners and as a place for retirement as with tourists. In addition, its outdoors are spectacular, the Teide National Park being just one of its protected areas covering nearly 45% of the area of the island.
