A nephew is going to spend a year in Spain to learn Spanish. He is unsure whether to stay in Barcelona or Madrid, or somewhere else. Any thoughts?

Does it not depend on his university?

No, he's taking a year out before going to university.

He'll have a great time in either place. I should have thought he would learn more Spanish in Madrid.

No, because there are more Brits in Barcelona. Actually, I'm not sure about that, it's just an impression. Catalan's not a problem, I have a Spanish friend in Barcelona trying to learn Catalan at the moment and he is finding it really difficult - he never gets the chance to practise it, everyone speaks Castilian Spanish.
