Cities and important towns in Portugal: Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, Evora...

SPV Articles, Sections and Links Pages

Lisbon
The eighteenth-century elegance and charm of Lisbon wns over the most cynical of travellers. SPV's account of the city and its attractions includes a photo-illustrated guide, links, maps, and a photogallery.

Oporto
Oporto or Porto is the second most important city in Portugal (and gave the country its name). It is a likable place, not immediately striking you with its beauty, but highly atmospheric, with a marked personality. It had been running down for years but benefited greatly from sharing the title of European Cultural Capital with Rotterdam in 2001. Selected, annotated links.

Elsewhere on the Net

Braga

Braga is a very old, charming, ecclesiastical city, in the Minho, in the north of Portugal.

Braga
The municipal site is surprisingly hi-tech, and has thrown itself heart and soul into the UEFA Euro tournament to be held in Portugal, especially Braga, in 2004. This aside, the site is excellent, offering information on the city, its sights, museums and other attractions, nightlife, restaurants, and accommodation. In short, everything you might ask of a website except online booking.

An introduction.

Braga - Virtual Tour
One of Enric Corberó's very enjoyable virtual tours.

Bragança

This historic city in the north-east of Portugal is the capital of the Trás-os-Montes region. This apart, the main reason for visiting Bragança would be to see the Citadel, the mediaeval walls above the town containing castle, keep and village.

Bragança
The municipal site is unfortunately Portuguese-only: click "Turismo" and "Monumentos" for the main sights of the town.

Coimbra

The Portuguese equivalent of Oxford or Salamanca, its university town par excellence, is also important as the centre of the "other fado," different from the Lisbon variety, and holds an interesting international music festival in July.

Coimbra
The Portuguese-only site of Coimbra City Council is very municipal, but...

Coimbra
...this site, which seems to belong to the University of Coimbra, is quite fine for information about the city, hotels and restaurants, and has some great photos of Coimbra's sights, mysteriously unaccompanied by any kind of explanation.

Evora

Evora is a lovely museum city, a world heritage site, not far from the Spanish border.

Evora
Do not be taken in by that misleading "Welcome;" the muncipal site is resolutely Portuguese-only (and so is this portal, which seems to belong to the council as well). It is a pity: click "Itinerários Históricos" to see some not very well explained but beautifully illustrated historic routes.

Evora
Evora as world heritage site.

Evora On-Line
A most attractive, informative webpage about this historic city, created and maintained by one A. Miguel.
