NATIONAL TEAMS: TOP
PORTUGAL
Portugal
- the National Side
The official page of the Portuguese selection is excellent.
High-tech without being slow, with great content: the
Gallery and Multimedia sections are especially recommended.
Portugal
- the Federation
The practically Portuguese-only site of the FPF, Federação
Portuguesa de Futebol. Information about all the
teams - the national side, women's, under-21's, and
so on. Slooooow.
SPAIN
Spain
- the National Team
Actually the (Spanish-only) site of the Real Federación
española de futbol, but more concerned with the
national side than anything else. Not especially impressive,
but the information is fairly complete and there is
a little about women's football, five-a-side and dope
control.
Spanish-soccer.com
A magnificent site, with almost all you could possibly
hope for, bar Zidane's transfer fee to spend on a weekend
away. News, league tables, results, match reports, a
forum, virtual league... At the time of writing, bits
of the site are not working properly, though.
CLUBS:
ALAVES (DEPORTIVO
ALAVÉS) TOP
Official
Site
The club of Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of the
Basque province of Álava. This official site
is in Flash, but surprisingly agile. Spanish only.
Glorioso
An e-zine dedicated to the Deportivo Alavés.
Very amateurish, technically, but full of content. Spanish
only.
Unofficial
Alavés Site
A good, slick fansite. In Spanish, Basque and English
(to a certain extent).
ATHLETIC
CLUB BILBAO TOP
Athletic
Cub Bilbao
The Athletic has a tradition of using local players,
scouting them at a tender age. The team was founded
in 1898 by young Basques who had been to school in England,
whence the English name, to simplify. Apart from the
history, I am afraid the most interesting thing I found
here was the club song, the melody of which is written
out for those who might want to program it into their
mobile telephones. In Spanish and Basque.
ATLÉTICO
DE MADRID TOP
Club
Atlético de Madrid
The Atléti's fans tend to blame its owner,
pushy, not to say dubious businessman/politician Jesus
Gil, for all their woes. And this historic club really
has been through sorry times, but is returning to the
Spanish First Division after an anguishing (for them)
period of exile. And at least and at last it has a website
worthy of it. The contents are mainly accessed from
the top menu bar. Spanish only.
Atlético
Zone
An excellent fansite, maintained by one Kevin Van Loo
from Belgium: faultless content, good design, comfortable
to use. And in English, and good English, at that.
BARCELONA
TOP
FC
Barcelona
Barcelona, los Azulgrana (blue and scarlet),
celebrated its centenary in 2001, which means it is
actually older than its eternal rivals, Real Madrid.
This is the official site, with plenty of information
about the team, matches and club, as well as its other
teams: basketball, handball, hockey, athletics, and
more. In the club colours, of course. In Spanish, Catalan
and English.
Barca.gol.ge
- David's F.C. Barcelona Site
The extension .ge must refer to Georgia. This fansite
used to be Sasha's Barcelona Site, and has been taken
over by David, another Barça-smitten Georgian.
Nicely put together, although some menu items - the
Gallery, for example - do not work. In English.
Barcelona
Hooligans
Or Boixos Nois, which my Catalan is not good
enough to translate. A humorous, irreverent, not to
say puerile site, with Photoshop porn collages which
made me laugh and a good links section. In Spanish,
Catalan and English.
Barcelona-world
I rather like the graphics on this fansite. In English.
Los
Blaugrana
Another fansite, much more professional but no more
endearing than David's. The news is excellent and the
video section extensive. There is much emphasis on what
they call "El Derbi," the odd name
they give to matches between the Barça
and Real Madrid. This is because beating their Madrid
rivals is much more important to Barça fans
than other types of success. In English.
BENFICA
TOP
S.L.
Benfica
All the information you would expect from the largest
football club in Portugal, full name Sport Lisboa e
Benfica. Portuguese only.
Eagleweb
A fansite maintained by one "Christian from Germany"
with a few charming animations. In English.
Estadio
da Luz
Benfica's home ground is included here because of the
curiosity that it is the largest stadium in Europe,
at least for the moment.
Megabenfica
A portal-style unofficial site. Looks great, but this
English version has not been updated since the end of
2001. Go here
for the latest Benfica news in Portuguese.
BETIS
TOP
Real
Betis Balompie
Betis is one of the two Seville clubs (the other is
Sevilla) and probably the one with the more devoted
fans. This is the official site, one of the most boring
I have found. Spanish only.
Real
Betis Balompie
This unoffical site pretending to be official is in
Flash, though quite fast, and has a lot of distracting
portal-type stuff on the left. If you want information
about the club, ignore it and use the Menú
on the right, but it is no great shakes. Spanish only.
Real
Betis Balompie - Unofficial Site
This unoffical site is much better than the two above
in that it has much more content, videos and so forth,
but has not been updated since 2001. Spanish only.
