Places on Majorca

Alcudia

An appealing port with a mediaeval feel to it in the north of the island, Alcudia is actually the oldest settlement on Majorca, founded by the Phoenicians. The Serra de Tramuntana, the most important area for walking holidays on Majorca, ends abruptly here, making for attractive views. The popular resort of Puerto Alcudia, just up the road, is technically a different place, but best mentioned in the same breath.

Alcudia
The muncipal site is passable: I am not really sure why I cannot be more enthusiastic than that.

Alcudia - from Majorca-Mallorca
Fine information from a UK site with a double-barrelled name.

Alcudia Scene
A splendid site from a resident Brit, covering most matters of interest to visitors: beaches, excursions, transport... Froze my browser, though.

S'Arenal/Platja de Palma

A half-an-hour's bus ride away from the centre of Palma, Arenal was one of the first places on Majorca to be developed for mass tourism and consequently is generally acknowledged to be one of the least attractive places on the island. But its down-marketness means there are some unbelievable accommodation bargains to be had here. Also, money has been spent doing it up, the beach is great, and the nightlife as lively as anyone could want. If you run a Google search on "Mallorca Arenal," practically all the results returned are German sites: there is a reason for this, so and anyone expecting English food like paella and chips will be disappointed. And bear in mind that Playa/Platja de Palma and S'Arenal are really the same place: hoteliers prefer the former.

Arenal from MallorcaFact.com
A balanced description and some very professional photos from this site of undeclared but not English-speaking provenance.

Playa de Palma - from MallorcaWebsite.com
Garish, messy-looking, old-fashioned, out of date and generally shoddy. Quite appropriate, really, or would have been a few years ago.

Banyabulfar

A tenth century village in the south-west of the Sierra Tramuntana, perched on cliffs overlooking the sea.

Banyabulfar - Muncipal Site
If you can call a village of 527 inhabitants a municipality. The site offers the inestimable information that the natives here are called "banyalbufarins." Try saying it ten times quickly.

Cala d'Or
The smartest of the east coast resorts actually spreads out over a number of coves. It says something about Cala d'Or that its marina tends to be the centre of activities, though it is considered a good place for family holidays as well.

Cala d'Or - from ThisisTravel.co.uk
The travel site of Associated Newspapers (Daily Mail, Evening Standard, etc.) offers concise, focused, clinically precise resort reviews aimed, I would guess, at the sort of people who read the Daily Mail. This one gives Cala d'Or the thumbs up.

Lineker's Bar
One of a chain of bars stretching from Tenerife to Cyprus and named after the eponymous football star. The site is impeccably designed and quite fun, though I think the most illuminating information given is that "Lineker’s Bar in Cala D’Or is the only place where you can party until 3am." Three am? That's practically early evening by Spanish standards.

Santanyi
The very basic municipal site of the town within which Cala d'Or lies. Unsurprisingly, the most interesting page (of the three or four) is "Places of Interest."
