Palma
Palma is a thriving, working city, by no means dependent
on tourism for a livelihood. Its seo
or cathedral is one of the most magnificent in Spain, with
a waterfront location which is very nearly as spectacular
as it used to be and an awful lot drier. Other sights are
the adjacent Almudaina
Palace; the Gothic Llotja,
exchange; the Banys Arabs, Arab Baths; and a host of interesting
churches, especially Santa Eulalia and the Basilica de Sant
Francesc. It is a great place for eating and drinking, offering
tapas bars and both Catalan and specifically Mallorquín
restaurants, and the nightlife should be enough for all but
the most insomniac. For beaches, you will need to head out
east to Ca'n Pastilla or S'Arenal (Playa de Palma), or west
to Cala Mayor or Sant Agusti.
Palma
City Council
I once rated this site as '"dreadful." Either I
was hung over when I wrote that or it has been greatly improved:
the map-based photo tour is rather good. Its English is occasionally
more entertaining than intended ("Yards of Palma"
refers to the patios), but that is quibbling, and if you stray
into the part in Mallorquín, it even has a couple of
endearing games.

Portals Nous/Puerto
Portals
Puerto Portals is known as one of the most exclusive marinas
in Europe, while Portals Nous is the classy development behind
it.

A simple but effective site from an Internet marketing company.

Porto Cristo
A lovely fishing village on the east coast of Mallorca, halfway
between Cala Millor and Cala d'Or and much more authentic
than either of them. Porto Cristo is one of the oldest settlements
on the island, active in Roman times. See also Manacor.
Portocristo.com
A half-hearted effort of a website which looks like it has
been dragged in by the cat, lacks an English-language version,
must have been put on the Net when dinosaurs ruled the earth
and has, in fact, no redeeming qualities whatsoever that I
can see. Porto Cristo deserves better.

Puerto Pollensa
Between English, Mallorquín and Spanish, its spelling
varies confusingly: Port or Puerto, the optional "de,"
Pollensa, Pollença... and to make matters worse, Pollença
is not the same place as Puerto Pollensa. Whatever, Puerto
Pollensa, in the north of Majorca, is a fishing village turned
rather chic resort and is a good choice if you want a taste
of the Mediterranean with all mod cons.
PuertoPollensa.com
Best of the Net
A great site which I have watched grow into maturity with
a certain feeling of paternalism. All its gaps have now been
filled in, it is entertaining and informative, its discussion
forum is active and it even sells mousepads. First class.
Puerto
Pollensa from Majorca-Mallorca.co.uk
Information quite well selected and presented from a site
with a double-barrelled name.
Sóller
To quote the site below, Sóller is "an attractive town
on Mallorca's north-west coast," actually an inland village
and the more populated Puerto Sóller on the coast,
separated by about 3 kilometres in that schizophrenic way
found in many Spanish coastal spots.
Sóllernet.com
A most attractive site which looks like and is the work of
a single mind, one Jeremy Lynton, a talented web
designer who lives in Soller. It is a quibble to say that
the logic of the order of subjects in the left-hand column
is not obvious. Very nice, indeed.
Valldemossa
This is the place in the Tramuntana Sierra where Freddie
Chopin and Georgie Sand bunked down together for the winter
of 1838-39.
Valldemossa.com
Don't be fooled by the Union Jack, there is only a little
content in English. There is, however, a sweet list of Ilustres
Personalidades, famous people, who have visited the
place recently, including ex-presidents Clinton and Carter.
Is there something about Valldemossa which repels Republicans?
